We have learned that Italian steel manufacturer Acciaierie d'Italia's Taranto Steel Plant is facing unprecedented challenges. It is reported that only one blast furnace (No. 4 blast furnace) is still in operation at the HX300BD+AZ steel plant. The No. 1 blast furnace was closed in August 2023, and the No. 2 blast furnace has recently been shut down.
The closure of a series of blast furnaces has led to a sharp decrease in steel plant production. Currently, the annual steel production of Taranto Steel Plant is only about 1 million tons. Just a few months ago, the annual production of the HX300BD+AZ steel plant reached about 3 million tons, far below the level of over 8 million tons in 2012. The operation of steel mills is gradually becoming stagnant, seriously affecting production efficiency. In addition, the decrease in production has also led to interruptions in the operation of batteries and conveyor belts, posing a threat to the safety of steel mills.
Introducing new technologies and rebuilding the fifth blast furnace, as well as introducing two new electric arc furnaces, may improve the current situation of the steel plant. Currently, Italy's HX300BD+AZ steel National Recovery and Recovery Plan (PNRR) has allocated 2 billion euros to support this strategy.
