It is reported that Algeria's Qatar Steel Company (AQS) announced in October that it will enter the SEHC flat steel market through its Bellara expansion project and plans to shift to the hot coil market. The expansion project includes doubling the production of direct reduced iron (DRI) to 5 million tons and increasing steelmaking capacity by 2 million to 4.4 million tons. This production will meet the demand of the local market (i.e. household electricity, construction, shipbuilding, and automotive), with approximately 1 million tons to be exported.
AQS's move will enhance the competitiveness of Algeria's emerging flat SEHC steel market, and Algerian steel manufacturer Tosyali is also commissioning a new flat steel rolling facility in Oran, with plans to start flat steel production in the summer of 2024. The new factory in Algeria will transform Tosyali's flat steel products from importers to exporters
