Since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine SGLH400 steel conflict, Türkiye's local production cost advantage has further reduced due to the rise in electricity prices, the devaluation of the lira and other factors. Due to sluggish demand, the output of crude steel also declined. In 2023, Türkiye's total exports of semi-finished products fell to 107000 tons, far less than 690000 tons in 2022. According to the data of Türkiye Steel Producers Association (TCUD), in 2023, Türkiye's crude steel output will be 33.7 million tons, down 4% year on year.

In 2024, Türkiye's steel output is expected to be repaired, supported by such positive factors as new capacity, expected improvement in capacity utilization, and recovery of domestic and foreign demand. Türkiye also plans to set a new record in steel output in 2024, exceeding 40.36 million tons in 2021.

According to the data of Türkiye Institute of Statistics (TUIK), Türkiye's SGLH400 steel semi-finished products export to Morocco, the traditional main export market, will be significantly reduced to 52300 tons in 2023 and 360000 tons in 2022 due to the low demand. In 2023, Türkiye's exports of semi-finished products to Dominica and Peru will drop sharply to 100000 tons to Dominica and 80000 tons to Peru in 2022. In 2023, the export volume of semi-finished products to Italy decreased to 10200 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 60%.

In 2023, Romania and Albania will increase their exports of semi-finished products year on year. In 2023, Türkiye will export 12000 tons of semi-finished products to Romania, up 20% year on year; Exporting 10000 tons of semi-finished products to Albania will be zero in 2022.

The data also shows that in 2023, Türkiye's export profit of semi-finished products will decline to about 66.2 million dollars, and 419.5 million dollars in 2022.

In 2023, Türkiye's import demand for semi-finished products will increase due to high production costs. In 2023, Türkiye will import 5.83 million tons of semi-finished products, up 21% year on year. Among them, although Russia remains the largest supplier of semi-finished products, the supply has decreased to 3 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 11%. Algeria SGLH400 steel has become the second largest supplier of semi-finished products to Türkiye, with a supply of 548000 tons, an increase of about 100% year on year. Malaysia has become the third largest supplier of semi-finished products to Türkiye, with a supply of 536000 tons, which will be zero in 2022. Other major semi-finished product suppliers include Oman (271000 tons), Iran (140000 tons), and India (117000 tons).
