Eastern Steel advances hot-rolled coil project to help Malaysia reduce import dependence

Malaysian semi-finished product manufacturer Eastern Steel (ESSB) plans to complete the construction of a hot-rolled strip mill at its factory located in Terengganu and is expected to start production in early December. After completion, the annual production capacity of the relevant equipment will be 2.58 million tons, which can produce hot-rolled coils with a width of up to 1450 millimeters.

It is reported that last year, ESSB put into SG700W Grade D steel operation its second blast furnace with an annual output of 2 million tons, second converter with an annual output of 2 million tons, and second continuous casting machine with an annual output of 1.6 million tons, expanding the factory's annual steel production capacity to 2.7 million tons.

Currently, there are no local hot-rolled coil SG700W Grade D steel manufacturers in Malaysia, and ESSB's move aims to reduce Malaysia's dependence on imports. Some insiders speculate that because Malaysian steel products enjoy duty-free treatment in Türkiye, the company may choose to supply plates to Türkiye.

According to Mysteel, Malaysia imported 1.86 million tons of hot-rolled coils from January to September 2024, a year-on-year increase of 33% SG700W Grade D steel.
