In recent years, fluctuations in energy and raw material costs and sluggish market conditions have put pressure on the pricing of Türkiye's steel mills, forcing Türkiye's steel producers to focus on renewable energy investment to comply with the EU green agreement.
Türkiye's integrated steel producers Erdemir and Isdemir plan to invest in new solar power plants to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions. The company has applied for an environmental impact assessment from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change. The relevant departments initiated the approval process on February 19th, and the construction and installation projects will begin after obtaining environmental approval. The power plant is planned to be put into operation within two years A792 THS steel.
Erdemir is expected to invest $160 million to build a new large-scale solar power plant with a capacity of 235MWe in the central eastern province of Malatia, with an estimated annual power generation of 560 million kilowatts. Isdemari expects to invest $145 million to build a new 130MWe solar power plant in the eastern province of Shernak, with an estimated annual power generation of 390 million kilowatts A792 THS steel.
The Eregli steel plant of Erdemir, a subsidiary of Oyak Mining and Metallurgy Group, produces hot-rolled, cold-rolled, and galvanized steel coils, medium and thick plates, and tinplate. The Iskenderun steel plant of Isdemir produces steel billets, wire rods, and hot coils. The total crude steel production capacity of the two steel plants is 9.1 million tons per year.
According to the decarbonization roadmap for steel production of its parent company, Oyak Mining and Metallurgy Group, the specific goal is to reduce emissions from its factories in Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 25% by 2030, 40% by 2040, and zero by 2050 A792 THS steel.
