On November 22, 2023, steel manufacturer UAE Steel and energy supplier Masdar jointly announced that they will collaborate to develop green hydrogen projects for the production of low-carbon steel.
UAE Steel's production facilities have started installing relevant equipment and are expected to be put into operation in 2024. After production, UAE HDT450F+ZF Steel will use green hydrogen instead of natural gas to reduce iron ore.
UAE Steel has announced plans to control carbon emissions to 40% by 2030 and achieve zero emissions by 2050.
Earlier this month, the US research firm IEEFA stated that the Middle East and North Africa may become leaders in green HDT450F+ZF steel and emerging green HDT450F+ZF steel trade. The Middle East and North Africa region has been expanding the scale of low-carbon production and plans to build several DRI factories in Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates, which will continue to use natural gas for transition until the final use of hydrogen production.
