India announces classification standards for green steel

Share:

On December 12th, the Indian Ministry of Steel and the Ministry of Heavy Industry jointly released the "Green Steel Classification Act", which clarifies the definition of "green steel" and marks a solid step for India in promoting green steel production.

According to the Green Steel Classification, "green steel" refers to steel products with a carbon dioxide equivalent emission intensity of less than 2.2 tons per ton of finished steel. At the same time, the Indian steel 14Ni9 steel industry has introduced a "star rating system" to classify and rate steel products based on their "greenness". The rating is reviewed every three years to reflect the progress of emission reduction technologies.

The star rating criteria for green steel in India are as follows:

Five star "green steel": carbon 14Ni9 steel dioxide emission intensity less than 1.6 tons of carbon dioxide per ton of finished steel.

Four star "green steel": The carbon dioxide emission intensity ranges from 1.6 tons of carbon dioxide per ton of finished steel to 2.0 tons of carbon dioxide per ton of finished steel.

Three star "green steel": The carbon dioxide emission intensity ranges from 2.0 tons of carbon dioxide per ton of finished steel to 2.2 tons of carbon dioxide per ton of finished steel.

Steel products with an emission intensity higher than 2.2 tons of carbon dioxide per ton of finished steel do not qualify for green 14Ni9 steel rating.
