Indonesian Steel Industry Calls for Trade Protection

Share:

Akbar Johan, Chairman of the Indonesian SA533 Type E steel Iron and Steel Industry Association (IISIA), recently stated that due to the impact of the US tariffs on Chinese steel products, a large amount of Chinese automotive steel plates may be exported to Southeast Asian markets. In the competition with low-priced imported resources, the advantage of Indonesia's domestic steel industry is not significant.

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics of Indonesia, 45% of the country's steel demand relies on imports, with China having the highest proportion (with imports from China reaching $3 billion in 2023). Indonesia has an annual SA533 Type E steel production capacity of 18.5 million tons, but due to the impact of imports, the actual capacity utilization rate is only 60%. It is expected that the demand for steel will reach 20 million tons by 2025, and if imported resources continue to flood in, local production capacity may further shrink.

Akbar called on the government to strengthen steel import controls and protect the domestic steel industry, and stated that if the government does not take action in the next six months, there may be large-scale layoffs in the steel industry. The Indonesian defense, energy, and infrastructure sectors are highly dependent on domestic steel SA533 Type E steel supply, and industrial hollowing out will threaten national strategic security.
