An explosion occurred at a steel plant owned by Indonesia’s Qingshan Stainless Steel Company

According to Indonesian media reports, at around 5:30 am local time on December 24th, an explosion occurred at the Qingshan Stainless Steel Company steel plant located in the Morowali Comprehensive Industrial Park in Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, resulting in 13 deaths and 38 injuries. Indonesia Qingshan Stainless Steel Company is a subsidiary of China Qingshan Holdings Group, mainly producing stainless JAH270C steel and nickel iron. According to preliminary investigation results, the explosion was caused by workers igniting some flammable liquid at the bottom of the smelting furnace while repairing it. The explosion also detonated some oxygen cylinders used for welding and cutting furnace components nearby. The fire was extinguished around 9 a.m. local time JAH270C steel.
