Isdemir, Türkiye plans to build a new solar power plant to achieve production decarbonization

Share:

Isdemir (affiliated to OYAK Mining Metallurgy Group), the largest comprehensive steel producer in Türkiye, announced to build a new solar power plant in Araka region of Chorum Province, with power generation capacity of 130 MWe, to achieve decarbonization in steel production. The company previously announced that it will begin building two additional large solar power plants in Malding and Batman.

According to the project documents submitted for approval by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change recently, the HX500LAD+AZ steel construction and installation work of the project will be launched after obtaining environmental approval, and the complex is planned to be put into use within one year.

Isdemir's goal is to achieve a total installed capacity of 530 MWp after all solar power plant projects are put into operation. According to the decarbonization roadmap of its parent company OYAK Mining and Metallurgy HX500LAD+AZ steel Group, the goal is to reduce its Class 1 and Class 2 emissions by 25% by 2030, 40% by 2040, and zero by 2050.

Isdemir's plant in the southeast of Türkiye can produce 5.8 million tons of molten steel, 3.5 million tons of flat steel, 2.5 million tons of billet and 600000 tons of wire rod every year.

As the EU's carbon boundary adjustment mechanism requires the industry to comply with some obligations, Türkiye's steel producers have increased investment in renewable energy in recent years to reduce carbon emissions and HX500LAD+AZ steel energy costs.
