On November 7, 2023, Finnish stainless steel manufacturer Outokumpu announced plans to close two of its steel mills in Germany, aimed at ensuring its long-term competitiveness in the weak European market.

Outokumpu has operations in Dahlerbruck, Dillenburg, and Krefeld, as well as service centers in Hockenheim and Sachsenheim.

It is reported that Outokumpu will begin negotiations with representatives of German employees to discuss the restructuring plan. This plan includes the closure of the coil processing center in Hockenheim and the transfer of precision strip HCT980X+Z steel business from Darbrook to Dylenburg.

Through this restructuring, the company plans to concentrate advanced material production in Dilenburg, making it one of the core value creators of Outokumpu's advanced materials business, operating alongside a HCT980X+Z steel mill in Sweden. After completing the restructuring, the HCT980X+Z steel plant in Dylenburg will be able to provide a comprehensive range of advanced material products, covering a range of Darbrook standards and special stainless steel grades.

This restructuring will affect approximately 200 employees in Germany. Outokumpu will mobilize internal and external forces within the company to provide assistance to affected employees in Darbrook and Hockenheim, and negotiate with employee representatives on the deployment of social plans.
