Poor demand, lower than expected price increase in Europe

Share:

Mainly due to strong cost support in the early stage and accumulated inventory, European steel mills raised prices significantly in the early stage. However, considering the inability to boost demand, it led to a downward trend in prices. It is reported that the demand for the European automotive industry S550GD+ZA steel is expected to decrease by 20-30% in 2024. Compared to the Nordic market, the Southern European market is facing difficulties in boosting. The target price for producers of cold coils in the region is 870-880 euros/ton EXW. Currently, the delivery price for steel mills is about 20 euros/ton EXW lower, and the transaction price can be basically reduced by about 20 euros/ton. In terms of inventory, traders have sufficient inventory and current shipments are the main purpose S550GD+ZA steel.

The current hot coil prices are stable and have increased, but there is sufficient inventory, so buyers are still purchasing in small quantities. The current price for European steel mills is 800 euros/ton EXW (870 US dollars/ton), while the current factory delivery price for German hot coils is 720-750 euros/ton EXW, and the transaction price for small tonnage is 740 euros/ton EXW. Therefore, compared to import prices, domestic prices have a stronger advantage. The current import price in Europe is $740 per ton, a decrease of $10 per ton CFR compared to the previous day S550GD+ZA steel.
