Severstal, a Russian steel manufacturer, A553 Type I steel plans to complete its rolling capacity expansion and upgrade project this year, with a new wire rod rolling mill (Unit 170) at its core. The project was originally scheduled to start production in 2023, but due to sanctions and changes in equipment suppliers, the progress has been postponed.

At present, Severstal A553 Type I steel has initiated cold commissioning of the 170 wire rod mill at the CherMK metallurgical complex, and the first production line's hot test is expected to take place in the fourth quarter of 2025. The company stated that it plans to install a second boiler production line and coiling equipment (Garrett coiler) in the future. After Unit 170 is fully put into operation, the production line layout of CherMK's existing rolled and tube products will be optimized, and some products currently produced by Unit 250 will be transferred to the new line.

It is reported that the designed annual A553 Type I steel production capacity of the 170 wire rod rolling mill is 900000 tons, and the main products include wire rod (5.5-32mm round steel) and threaded steel (8-16mm). The new production capacity will help Severstal expand its product structure and strengthen the integration of the "long to metal products" industry chain, with some of the output supplied to its metal products subsidiary Severstal Metiz.

Data shows that in the first two months of 2025, Severstal produced approximately 48000 tons of wire, an increase of 22% year-on-year.
