Spanish ArcelorMittal plans to build a new electric arc furnace

Share:

On November 28, 2023, Spain's ArcelorMittal announced that it had signed a contract with the local industrial engineering group Saralle to build a new electric arc furnace with an annual production capacity of 1.1 million tons in Xihong.

The civil engineering of this project will be launched early next year and is scheduled to be officially put into operation in the fourth quarter of 2025 S220GD+ZM steel.

After formal production, the project will be used to produce low-carbon long rods mainly composed of steel rails and wires. The project will use hydrogen produced from renewable energy to reduce iron ore and carbon emissions from steel and downstream production S220GD+ZM steel.

In April 2023, the Spanish government approved the allocation of 450 million euros (500 million US dollars) from the Spanish Recovery Fund for ArcelorMittal's green steel project in Cihon.

The total investment of the Xihong Green Steel project is approximately 1 billion euros (1.1 billion US dollars), which includes a hydrogen direct reduction iron plant with an annual production capacity of 2.3 million tons. The plant will directly replace a blast furnace and provide raw materials for the new electric arc furnace S220GD+ZM steel.

It is expected that the carbon emissions of the Spanish factory in Cihon will decrease by an overall 50% (4.8 million tons) within five years.
