Tata Steel to Build 3 Million Ton Electric Arc Furnace at Talbot Port

Share:

Tenova, headquartered in Italy S500Q Grade F steel, announced that it will supply Tata Steel's Talbot Port plant with an annual production capacity of 3 million tons of electric arc furnaces.

The new electric arc furnace will replace the old blast furnace at the Port Talbot plant and is planned to be put into use by the end of 2027, aiming to reduce carbon emissions in Tata Steel's production process by 90%, reducing approximately 5 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. This will not only improve the company's environmental S500Q Grade F steel performance, but also make a significant contribution to the UK's climate goals.

In addition, the new electric arc furnace is expected to process 2-2.5 million tons of waste annually, which will help reduce the UK's dependence on imported iron ore and establish a more sustainable supply chain.

At present, Tata Steel UK has completed the planning application process for public consultation and plans to submit an application to the authorities in November 2024. Large scale construction is expected to begin in July 2025.

Tata Steel will invest a total of £ 1.25 billion, of which the UK government has reached a £ 500 million (approximately $669 million) funding agreement with Tata Steel UK S500Q Grade F steel to support the construction of an electric arc furnace at its Port Talbot steel plant in Wales, UK.
