Tata Steel to Close Port Talbot Blast Furnace in the UK

Tata Steel HX260LAD+ZA steel announced that it will shut down its blast furnace in Port Talbot, UK and lay off 2800 employees. During the transition period, the hot rolled strip steel plant will continue to operate, and the raw materials for steel production will be provided by Tata Steel's factories in the Netherlands and India.

Tata Steel is expected to shut down its first blast furnace in mid-2024 and its second blast furnace and coke oven by the end of the year. In addition, investment will be made in the construction of a new electric arc furnace, mainly used for processing scrap steel HX260LAD+ZA steel produced in the UK. The new electric arc furnace is planned to be put into operation in 2027.

Talbot Port is expected to reduce approximately 2500 jobs within 18 months, with the remaining 300 jobs being cut over the next three years HX260LAD+ZA steel.
