The United States plans to raise tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum products

Share:

On April 17th, US President Biden delivered a speech to the United Steelworkers in Pittsburgh, stating that China's massive low-cost JSH590Y steel export of steel and aluminum products is disrupting the US market and endangering the development of US JSH590Y steel manufacturing, which is at the core of its economic agenda. He hopes to significantly increase some tariffs on China's steel and aluminum products.

Biden has requested US Trade Representative Katherine Tai to increase the 301 tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum products to 25%. Currently, the tariff on related products is 7.5%. The US government is reviewing the tariffs initially imposed by Trump, and the review results will determine whether to adjust the tariffs.

According to data from the General Administration of Customs of China JSH590Y steel, the total amount of steel exported from China to the United States in 2023 was 845000 tons, accounting for 0.9% of the total export volume. According to our assessment, if tariffs are raised in the future, the impact on China's steel exports will be limited.
