According to the data of Türkiye Steel Producers Association (TCUD), Türkiye produced 3 million tons of crude steel in November 2023, an increase of 25% from 2.4 million tons in November 2022.
The association stated that the country's total crude steel production reached 30.5 million tons from January to November 2023, a year-on-year decrease of 6.15% compared to 32.5 million tons in the same period of 2022 SGH490 steel.
The annual production capacity of newly started equipment in the country exceeds 6 million tons, supporting an increase in production in the third quarter of 2023. Major producers such as Colakpglu, Tosyali, and Erdemir increased their production capacity during this period. However, TCUD pointed out that Türkiye needs to keep its energy costs at a reasonable level, take effective measures to deal with dumping imports, and adjust the import processing system to avoid local supply exceeding the 40.4 million tons set in 2021. The final products exported by companies holding the certificate of Türkiye's import processing system are not subject to import tariff restrictions, and most plate re rolling plants use their certificates to import hot rolled coils SGH490 steel.
Recently, Türkiye has taken a series of actions against dumped imports. On October 31st, the Ministry of Trade announced plans to launch anti-dumping investigations on imports of hot-rolled steel coils from China, India, Japan, and Russia. Starting from January 1, 2024, additional import tariffs will be imposed on coated coils, as well as some hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils. According to the official gazette of Türkiye, Türkiye will also implement a temporary safeguard tariff of 175 dollars for 200 days on the import of hot rolled wire rods from January 8 SGH490 steel.
