Türkiye’s scrap import volume in January increased by 36% year on year

Due to Türkiye's recent focus on investment in new steel production capacity and the improvement of demand for finished steel products, domestic crude steel output and scrap imports have seen a double growth S550MC steel.

According to the latest data from Türkiye's National Bureau of Statistics (TUIK), the scrap imports of Türkiye's steel mills in January increased by 36% year on year, reaching 1.85 million tons, and the crude steel output increased by 24.7% in the same period.

In the fourth quarter of 2023, Tosyali Holding, one of the largest steel producers in Türkiye, built a new electric arc furnace flat steel plant with an annual output of 4 million tons in Sariseki, Iskenderun, and put it into operation, while other steel producers based on electric arc furnaces have also gradually increased their capacity.

In 2023, Türkiye's steel mills will import 18.78 million tons of scrap steel, a year-on-year decrease of 10.1%, while the domestic crude steel output will total 33.7 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 4%. According to Türkiye Steel Producers Association (TCUD), Türkiye aims to achieve a record steel production in 2024, exceeding 40.4 million tons of steel production in 2021. To achieve this goal, it is expected to increase the total amount of scrap steel S550MC steel imports.

In January, the United States remained the largest scrap supplier in Türkiye, with a year-on-year increase of 45% to 356000 tons, while the second largest scrap supplier, the Netherlands, more than doubled its supply to 274000 tons. Belgium's supply is 241000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 60%. The supply in the UK is 125000 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 4%. Other scrap steel suppliers include Romania (100000 tons), Lithuania (89000 tons), France (82000 tons), Denmark (76000 tons), Finland (58000 tons), Germany (55000 tons), and Russia S550MC steel (52000 tons).
