On November 29, 2023, American Steel announced that it had indefinitely shut down its primary
S350GD+ZM steel making business at Granite City Works, while extending the shutdown period of the last operating blast furnace at the Illinois
S350GD+ZM steel plant, aimed at ensuring a balance between steel making capacity and order demand.
As early as September 18th, due to the ongoing strike by American car workers leading to a decrease in steel demand, American
S350GD+ZM steel Company temporarily closed Granite City's B blast furnace. The annual rated production capacity of blast furnace B is 1.4 million tons, making it the only operating blast furnace in Granite City, while blast furnace A was indefinitely shut down in 2020.
