The British government says the Prime Minister will announce a £35 million contract to supply rail materials to British Steel.

The contract aims to provide rails for Turkey's high-speed rail network and will be formally announced by Prime Minister Sir Kiel Starmer at the G20 summit in Johannesburg this weekend.

Lisa Coulson, Chief Commercial Officer of British Steel, said: “We are deeply grateful for the government’s support and are confident that our partnership with the operators will generate more orders in the near future and create new jobs in Scunthorpe.”

The UK government stated that the contract is part of a portfolio of export agreements totaling over £400 million, which will open up new overseas market opportunities for British businesses.

This contract complements a similar-sized project from last year. Previously, British Steel had won a bid for the high-speed rail project in southern Turkey, supplying products for the railway connecting Mersin, Adana, Osmaniye, and Gaziantep.

Coulson added: “We have already delivered £30 million worth of rail products to the Turkish high-speed rail project to help it promote low-carbon travel, and we are delighted to build on that by signing new supply agreements. B23P100 oriented electrical steel, Working with international partners to create jobs and opportunities domestically is essential for economic growth."
