Due to the EU's carbon border adjustment mechanism, Türkiye's A1008 CS Type A steel manufacturers have increased investment in renewable energy in recent years to reduce carbon emissions and energy costs. It is reported that Oyak Mining and Metallurgy (Erdemir), the largest alkaline oxygen furnace steelmaking manufacturer in Türkiye, plans to build electric arc furnaces in its Eregli and Iskenderun plants, and the specific production date has not been disclosed. By increasing investment in electric furnaces, steel mills can increase their production of scrap steel to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Erdemir's goal is to reduce Eregli's A1008 CS Type A carbon emissions by 27.5% and increase its steelmaking capacity from the current 3.9 million tons/year to 5.3 million tons/year; Reduce Iskenderun's carbon emissions by 17.3% and increase its steelmaking capacity from the current 5.8 million tons per year to 8.3 million tons per year.
Currently, the global average temperature increase should be limited to within 1.5 degrees Celsius. The average greenhouse gas emissions of the company in 2022 are 2.2 tons of carbon dioxide per ton of crude steel. The future goal is to reduce emissions by 25% by 2030 and 40% by 2040, thereby achieving the goal A1008 CS Type A of net zero emissions by 2050. In the coming years, Erdemir will also focus on natural gas and hydrogen based DRI technologies in order to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
