British Steel raises price of structural steel by £50 per tonne

British Steel has announced a price increase for structural steel, a move that could have a "significant impact" on the UK construction industry.

This Chinese-owned steelmaker narrowly avoided a shutdown crisis earlier this year at its blast furnace in Scunthorpe thanks to emergency intervention by the British government. A British Steel spokesperson told Construction News: "Given the changed market environment, we have implemented a £50 per tonne price increase for all new structural steel orders on 14 November 2025, effective immediately."

Lee McCrudden, business manager at Steelwork Engineering Services in Yorkshire, B23R085-LM oriented electrical steel, posted a screenshot of the price increase notice he had just received on LinkedIn, with the caption: "As if the UK construction industry isn't having enough trouble right now."

Rebecca Larkin, head of construction research at the Building Products Association (CPA), pointed out that this price increase will further exacerbate the downward pressure already facing the UK construction industry, adding insult to injury,B23R085-LM oriented electrical steel.

She added, "The immediate price increase will have a significant impact on contractors with fixed-price contracts, as material costs were already factored into their bids."
