Saba Steel, a major Iranian hot-briquetted briquettes (HBI) producer in the Persian Gulf, reported positive production growth in the Persian calendar year (March 21, 2024, to March 20, 2025). Exports were the primary driver, driven by the stable support of traditional overseas customers. Data shows that the company's HBI production increased by 15% year-on-year this year, reaching approximately 1.3 million tons. Over 60% of this was exported, with overseas trade increasing by nearly 80% year-on-year. Saba Steel CEO Ehsan Dashtianeh cited China, Oman, and India as the main export destinations. He noted, "This achievement is significant, NK K/B steel but unfortunately, unreasonable export policies, such as the imposition of inappropriate tariffs, not only do not contribute to the development of the steel industry, but actually harm it." Currently, Iran's HBI and DRI exports are subject to a 5% tariff.
To further expand its market share, Saba Steel is pursuing several expansion projects. The company is reportedly implementing an investment plan to produce 1.76 million tons of HBI annually and has begun preliminary construction on a project to produce up to 3 million tons of sheet and coil annually.
