South Australia Liberty steel plant receives important subsidies for energy transformation

The Australian government recently announced an energy transition subsidy worth AUD 63.2 million (approximately USD 41.5 million) to support the Liberty steel plant in South Australia in purchasing and operating a new type of furnace. The subsidy funds will be used to purchase low-carbon SGLHC steel electric arc furnaces to replace the existing blast furnaces of Whyalla Steelworks, which is expected to further enhance the environmental friendliness of the production process.

At the same time, Australian Bluescope Steel BSL. AX will also receive a subsidy worth AUD 136.8 million to upgrade the blast furnace facilities at Port Kembla Steelworks SGLHC steel . In addition to existing plans, Liberty steel plant also plans to expand its magnetite project to produce green steel SGLHC steel products, utilizing hydrogen as a key energy source in the production process.
