Turkish long steel producer Bilecik Steel Company (BDC) announced that its HEZ Morali geothermal power plant in Germancik, Aydin Province, officially commenced operation on September 22, with an installed capacity of 24 megawatt-hours. L555M steel, All official acceptance procedures have been completed. This is the company's second renewable energy investment, following its 11.2 megawatt-hour wind power capacity, aiming to improve energy self-sufficiency and reduce carbon emissions from electricity consumption.
Since 2021, BDC has continuously conducted carbon footprint verifications through independent organizations in accordance with ISO 14064 standards, becoming the first Turkish liquid steel producer to register carbon neutrality targets for 2030 and 2050 under the SBTi (Scientific Carbon Targeting Initiative) framework. The company plans to reduce its overall carbon footprint by 40% by 2030.
In terms of capacity planning, BDC received approval from the Turkish Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change in January 2025 for an expansion project, which plans to increase the annual smelting capacity of its three existing furnaces from 226,800 tons to 400,000 tons, and the scrap steel consumption is expected to increase from 267,000 tons to 434,400 tons. L555M steel, This move will not only help increase the company's capacity, but also conform to the industry's trend of transforming towards low-carbon and high-efficiency production.
Despite the overall international competitive pressures facing the Turkish steel industry, BDC's investments in renewable energy and carbon reduction commitments highlight its forward-looking approach to green transformation. Industry insiders generally believe that the combined use of clean energy sources such as geothermal and wind power is gradually becoming an important path for steel companies to enhance their sustainable competitiveness.
