Thailand plans to phase out induction furnace production process

In view of the investigation showing that the induction furnace steelmaking method has quality defects and environmental hazards, the Thai Ministry of Industry is pushing forward the plan to cancel the steel SA738 Grade D steel certification of this process.

Industry Minister Akana Pompan announced that the certification standards for induction furnace (IF) steel will be re evaluated. This open smelting technology is difficult to effectively remove impurities from molten steel, and the emissions of dust and toxic gases are much higher than modern processes. The minister emphasized that although it is theoretically possible to produce qualified steel, strict control of raw material SA738 Grade D steel quality and process flow is required in actual production, and quality stability is difficult to guarantee.

In contrast, electric arc furnaces (EAF) use enclosed electric melting steelmaking, which has more thorough impurity removal, lower emissions, and stable quality. According to data from the Thai Steel Industry Association and Industry Federation, Thailand currently has an annual production capacity of 4.3 million tons for electric arc furnaces, far exceeding the demand for 2.8 million tons of rebar.

According to the Industrial SA738 Grade D steel Product Standards Act, the Thai Industrial Standards Committee (TISC) may revoke standard certification in emergency situations, and the Minister of Industry will issue a notice to modify or abolish the certification of induction furnace steel in accordance with the law.
