India’s Jindal Steel puts a 5 million-ton-capacity blast furnace into operation, significantly expanding its production capacity

It is reported that Jindal Steel in India has officially put into operation a blast furnace with an annual capacity of 5 million tons at its integrated steel plant in Angul, Odisha, making it one of the largest blast furnaces in the country.

With the new blast furnace in operation, the company's pig iron production capacity will increase from 4 million tons/year to 9 million tons/year, and its total crude steel production capacity is expected to increase to 12 million tons/year. X52M steel, The blast furnace has an effective volume of 5,499 cubic meters, second only to the 5,870 cubic meter blast furnace that Tata Steel put into operation in Kalinganagar, Odisha last year.

Jindal Steel stated that the blast furnace, equipped with advanced automation systems, reliable safety measures, and environmentally friendly design, reflects the company's commitment to innovation while preserving traditional smelting technologies. X52M steel, The Angur plant will become a core driver of the company's future expansion strategy, with subsequent plans including the construction of a dedicated port in Paradip, the laying of slurry pipelines and coal conveyor belts, and the investment in supporting facilities such as the Shrikhumi power plant and new coke ovens.

Meanwhile, Jindal Steel Duqm, a subsidiary of the Jindal Steel Group, has ordered a second hydrogen-compatible direct reduced iron (DRI) unit from Danieli for the production of hot-pressed iron blocks (HBI) in Duqm, Oman. X52M steel, The first Energiron DRI unit is under construction and is scheduled to begin production in 2026.

According to another report, Thyssenkrupp of Germany recently announced that it has received a non-binding takeover offer from Jindal Steel International, targeting its steel business unit, Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe (TKSE).
