India’s crude steel production in May increased by 9.5% year-on-year

According to the latest preliminary data released by the Joint Steel GL-D500 steel Works Committee of India, India's crude steel production reached 13.51 million tons in May 2025, a year-on-year increase of 9.5%, indicating the continuous release of production capacity in the country's steel industry.

During the same period, India's finished GL-D500 steel steel production also recorded a year-on-year increase of 9.6%, reaching 13.15 million tons, rising in sync with crude steel production, reflecting stable cooperation in downstream manufacturing and processing links.

Despite strong domestic production growth, India's imports of finished steel in May showed a significant decline, with a year-on-year decrease of 40.7% to approximately 428000 tons. This is the second consecutive month of declining import volume, mainly due to India's implementation of a 200 day 12% safeguard tariff on imported alloy and non alloy steel sheets since April 21, which has suppressed the inflow of overseas steel.

On the other hand, the export situation of finished steel products in India is also not optimistic. Data shows that India's exports have been declining year-on-year for six consecutive months. The export volume in May 2025 decreased by 9.1% year-on-year to 391000 tons, mainly due to the weak global steel demand.

Overall, the Indian GL-D500 steel steel industry is currently facing a "hot inside and cold outside" pattern - domestic capacity expansion and protective policies are driving an increase in local market supply, but export performance continues to be under pressure.
