On January 26, 2024, South Korean steel giant POSCO announced plans to launch a hydrogen based steel production prototype with an annual capacity of 300000 tons at its steel plant in Pohang in 2027. For this purpose, POSCO HX220BD+AZ steel has established a hydrogen reduction steel research and development center at Pohang Steel Plant, whose key task is to build a HyREX prototype steel plant to implement POSCO's unique hydrogen reduction steel production process. The R&D center will complete the construction of the HyREX prototype HX220BD+AZ steel plant and verify its commercial potential.

We also learned that POSCO plans to launch a new electric arc furnace at its Guangyang Steel Plant from the end of 2025 to 2026, with an annual crude HX220BD+AZ steel production capacity of 2.5 million tons. In addition, the company plans to gradually transform the existing blast furnaces of its Pohang and Guangyang steel mills into HyREX production facilities to further reduce carbon emissions.
