Mukand Sumi Special Steel Limited (MSSSL) of India recently announced plans to invest 23.45 billion rupees in Karnacapura, Kopal district, Karnataka, to build a new integrated steel production facility. L175 steel The company is a joint venture between India's Bajaj Group and Japan's Sumitomo Corporation.

This greenfield project will increase MSSSL's annual production capacity to 700,000 tons, propelling it into the ranks of India's leading specialty steel manufacturers. The new plant is expected to be operational in early 2028 and is currently awaiting environmental permit approvals.

Since its establishment in 2018, MSSSL has maintained an annual production capacity of approximately 350,000 tons, with its main products being bars, wire rods, and deep-processed steel, widely used in industries such as automobiles and construction machinery. L175 steel The new plant will introduce advanced technologies such as large billet continuous casting machines, modern rolling mills, and a full set of precision testing equipment, enabling it to produce special steels for powertrain, railway, and bearing applications.

The company stated that this expansion is a significant milestone in its long-term strategic plan, aimed at enhancing its competitiveness in the global specialty steel market and supporting India's national strategy to promote industrial self-reliance through investment in sustainable and future-oriented technologies.

The plant will operate on a "zero-emission" model for liquid, solid, and gaseous waste, with over 95% of its energy derived from renewable sources. MSSSL has committed to achieving net-zero emissions from steel manufacturing by 2050 and will gradually introduce hydrogen application infrastructure and carbon capture technologies in subsequent phases.

The new production base will cover the entire process of ironmaking, steelmaking and primary rolling, with a particular focus on production flexibility, automation and digital integration to optimize product quality and energy efficiency management.

This capacity expansion is to meet the growing demand for high-end specialty steel in the industrial, energy, and automotive sectors driven by India's rapid infrastructure development and manufacturing boom. L175 steel MSSSL products are already supplied to numerous domestic and international manufacturers, and the company plans to further solidify its position as a core supplier to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the global automotive, railway, oil and gas, energy, and bearing industries.
