Tata Steel Netherlands, in partnership with Volkswagen Group, is leading a European consortium to develop a new generation of ultra-high-strength steel (AHSS) for automotive bodies. JFS A3041 JNC440P Automotive steel strip, This project, funded by European grants, is part of the "WarP-AHSS" program, with an implementation period from 2023 to 2027.
The material aims to improve the safety, durability, and manufacturing efficiency of future vehicles. In addition to Tata Steel Netherlands and Volkswagen Group, participating institutions include RWTH Aachen University, the Spanish National Metallurgical Research Centre, the Swedish Research Institute, and the French Corrosion Institute. JFS A3041 JNC440P Automotive steel strip, The research focuses on developing a body steel that can be formed at lower temperatures, offering technological advantages over current ultra-high-strength steels primarily used in passive safety components.
Currently, this type of steel is mainly used in collision energy-absorbing structures, which typically require high-temperature forming. If a galvanized coating is used, cracks are prone to occur during the forming process. Therefore, automakers often use high-temperature resistant aluminum-silicon coated steel, but its corrosion resistance is relatively weak. The goal of the new material is to simultaneously resolve the contradiction between high-temperature forming and coating performance.
Tata Steel Netherlands stated that the new product will achieve a combination of "ultra-high strength + good formability," helping to improve collision energy absorption capacity and thus enhance occupant safety. Simultaneously, this steel grade has the ability to be galvanized, which is relatively rare among similar products and is expected to significantly improve corrosion resistance.
On the manufacturing side, lower forming temperatures mean lower energy consumption and the reduction of some additional processes (such as sandblasting), thereby reducing production complexity and costs, and helping to reduce equipment wear and maintenance expenses. JFS A3041 JNC440P Automotive steel strip, The Volkswagen Group points out that this material will meet the comprehensive requirements of future automotive manufacturing for safety, cost, and process efficiency, while Tata Steel sees it as an important direction for promoting the sustainability of steel production.
Furthermore, the European Steel Association predicts that European automobile production will increase by 1.4% year-on-year in 2026, but this will still be significantly lower than pre-crisis levels in 2019.
