ThyssenKrupp to Supply Low-Carbon Steel to BMW Group for New Energy Models

On February 23, the German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp Steel announced that it would supply its "bluemint" recycled green steel to the BMW Group for the production of select car body components. 47F190 Non oriented magnetic steel, The initial deliveries are scheduled to commence this year and will be utilized for the outer panels and battery casings of the BMW iX3 model; the specific supply volume was not disclosed.

ThyssenKrupp stated that this material incorporates a high proportion of recycled raw materials, and its carbon reduction performance has been certified by TÜV Süd, demonstrating a significant reduction in emissions compared to conventional steel. 47F190 Non oriented magnetic steel, Bluemint recycled steel is a mass-balance product; its hot-rolled coils generate carbon emissions of approximately 0.75 tons per ton—a reduction of roughly 1.35 tons compared to standard steel.

The company states that this product meets the quality standards of the automotive industry. Currently, European automakers are among the primary end-users of "green steel" and are increasingly willing to accept higher green premiums, given that the cost of flat steel constitutes a relatively small proportion of the total cost of a finished vehicle.

However, the automotive industry imposes stricter quality requirements on steel than buyers in the spot market. 47F190 Non oriented magnetic steel, Market observers point out that as steelmakers undertake equipment upgrades or rely on newly constructed facilities to advance their decarbonization efforts, their ability to maintain a stable supply of steel to automakers could face certain challenges.

On the market front, the premium for green steel in Europe stands at approximately €70–100 per tonne (benchmarked against tradable spot hot-rolled coil). Buyers are gradually shifting their preference toward steel produced via the electric arc furnace route, rather than blast furnace-based mass-balance low-carbon products—particularly within the import market.
