574 national highway projects in India are behind schedule, involving an investment of over 3.6 trillion rupees

The Indian government recently informed Parliament that 574 national highway projects under construction across the country have fallen behind schedule, with a total estimated investment of 3.6 trillion rupees.

In a written response to the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament), Federal Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari stated that these delayed projects were all awarded within the past five years. The minister also pointed out that another 133 national highway projects, with a total investment of approximately 1 trillion rupees, have completed bidding, but cannot officially announce commencement dates due to unmet preconditions such as unclear land ownership and lack of forest and wildlife protection permits.

Regarding construction progress, as of October 2025, 3,468 kilometers of national highways had been completed in the current fiscal year.
