The joint venture between ArcelorMittal SMA490BW steel and Nippon Steel, AM/NS India, is preparing to develop one of India's largest new steel projects, with an estimated investment of INR 1.4 trillion (USD 16.8 billion). The steel plant is planned to be built in the Anakapali district of Andhra Pradesh, with a total production capacity of 17.8 million tons per year (MTPA).
The project is expected to be implemented in two phases. The first phase will invest 800 billion rupees (9.6 billion US dollars) to establish a steel SMA490BW steel mill with an annual production capacity of 7.3 million tons on 2600 acres of land. In the next phase, an additional investment of 600 billion rupees (7.2 billion US dollars) will be made to build a facility with an annual production capacity of 10.5 million tons, and the project area will be expanded by 2000 acres.
The factory adopts advanced green steel technology aimed at reducing India's dependence on steel imports. In addition, AM/NS India SMA490BW steel is applying to build a dedicated terminal to simplify the import process of raw materials for international suppliers. The project is scheduled to commence in January 2025 and will support AM/NS India's strategic goal of achieving a 40 MTPA production capacity by 2035.
