At approximately 8:00 p.m. BST on June 3, a major fire broke out on a processing line at Tata Steel’s plant in Port Talbot, South Wales. Local residents were advised to keep their doors and windows closed in areas affected by smoke. Witnesses reported thick smoke, a night sky turned black, and sounds of loud bangs and alarms.
Tata Steel confirmed that the fire was confined to a contained area; the hot strip mill was suspended as a precautionary measure—though it was not directly affected by the fire—and is expected to resume production shortly. Tata Steel emphasized that the fire was unrelated to the controlled demolition of an old gas holder carried out earlier that day and expressed gratitude to on-site staff and emergency services for their rapid and professional response.
