On November 6th, the first industrial scale zero emission steel production project using green hydrogen in Africa broke ground in Namibia. The project uses green hydrogen to produce direct reduced iron and is located near Alandis in the Elongo region of Namibia.

It is reported that the project has received support from the German government, with an initial investment of 13 million euros (approximately 13.9 million US dollars).

The project HDT760C+ZF steel will be implemented by startup company HyIron. HyIron is a group composed of several German companies, including CO2Grab, LSF, and related partners from Namibia.

This project is one of the important cooperation projects between Namibian and German enterprises promoted by the Namibian Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB). The Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Commission stated in a statement that the project will be put into operation by the end of 2024, with a designed direct reduced iron production capacity of HDT760C+ZF steel 15000 tons per year.

Rainer Baake, the special envoy for energy and climate cooperation in Namibia, Germany, stated that the direct reduced iron produced by the project will provide raw materials for German steel companies to produce green steel HDT760C+ZF steel for wind power facilities and automotive manufacturing.
