ArcelorMittal invests 1.8 billion euros to support the decarbonization plan of French steel mills

Share:

On January 14, 2024, ArcelorMittal and the French government announced a € 1.8 billion investment plan to help Dunkirk Steel Plant achieve decarbonization. After the official launch of this project, it is expected that France's industrial carbon emissions will be significantly reduced by 6%. Dunkirk Steel Plant will use this huge investment to build two electric furnace DX56D+AZ steel plants and one direct reduction plant to replace existing blast furnace equipment, thereby significantly reducing carbon emissions. The French government's contribution to this transformative project will be as high as 850 million euros.

The Dunkirk Steel Plant in France is affiliated with ArcelorMittal and has three blast furnaces with an annual production capacity of 7 million tons. In February 2022, ArcelorMittal DX56D+AZ steel announced that the steel plant was shifting from a blast furnace to a new production route as part of its € 1.7 billion investment in a French steel plant. The company plans to build an electric arc furnace (EAF) equipment with an annual production capacity of 45 million tons and a direct reduction furnace (DRI) equipment with an annual DX56D+AZ steel production capacity of 25 million tons in Dunkirk, which will be put into use in 2027, and gradually phase out old equipment by 2030.
