Brazil’s Galdo Plan to Restart Steel Plants in the Northeast Region

Share:

Brazilian steel manufacturer Gerdau recently announced plans to restart production lines at the Maracanau and Cocaya steel plants located in the northeast of the state of Ceara on January 2, 2024. Two months ago, a large influx of low-priced imported resources had a certain impact on the domestic market demand in Brazil. To cope with this situation, Galdor temporarily closed the production activities of these two JAH310W steel mills. Currently, the Brazilian steel industry is still urging authorities to impose a 25% import tariff on all steel products to ensure a competitive advantage in domestic resources.

However, recent exchange rate fluctuations and rising international JAH310W steel prices have led to a narrowing of the gap between the clearance prices of imported steel products in Brazil and domestic prices, which has to some extent weakened the effectiveness of this measure. Nevertheless, the imposition of a 25% import tariff still has a certain impact. Previously, the premium on imported resources had reached as high as 35%. But according to the latest data from the Brazilian JAH310W Steel Dealers Association INDA, this premium has now dropped to about 10%, thereby reducing the willingness of the steel consumption sector to import.
