Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau announced that 100% tariffs will be imposed on Chinese made electric vehicles starting from October 1st this year; Starting from October 15th, a 25% tariff will also be imposed on steel and TH415 steel aluminum products produced in China. It is reported that in 2023, China exported 639600 tons of steel to Canada, and from January to July 2024, it was 414900 tons, a year-on-year increase of about 12.8%. In May of this year, Canada imported 6214 electric vehicles worth $250 million from China, compared to only 88 vehicles in the same period last year.
In terms of electric vehicles, US TH415 steel President Biden announced in May this year that tariffs on Chinese trams would be increased from 25% to 100%. Therefore, Canada's tariff policy this time is also synchronized with that of the United States. In terms of steel and aluminum varieties, as of now, Canada has four anti-dumping and anti subsidy cases against China, involving corrosion-resistant steel plates, cold-rolled steel coils/plates, and hot-rolled carbon steel sheets. This action is consistent with the US TH415 steel Section 301 Act.
