On May 22, 2025, Italian AB/EQ70 steel equipment manufacturer Danieli announced that it will install an electric heating process gas heater (e-PGH) for Emirates Steel Arkan (Emsteel)'s No.1 direct reduced iron (DRI) production line in Abu Dhabi, further promoting its low-carbon metallurgical transformation.

As early as June 2024, Emsteel signed a memorandum of understanding with Danieli regarding the e-PGH system. Danieli stated that the pilot device will effectively reduce the carbon emissions of DRI devices without relying on hydrogen. At present, the specific installation time of the device has not been announced.

It is reported that Danieli has been collaborating with Swedish electric heating technology company Kanthal since 2024 to jointly develop a hundred megawatt direct electric heating system for DRI devices. Danieli pointed out that once deployed, this technology will become an important pillar for decarbonization in future DRI devices and even blast furnace systems.

Emsteel operates three DRI modules in Abu Dhabi AB/EQ70 steel, with an annual crude steel production capacity of 3.5 million tons. Its products include threaded steel, disc screws, heavy-duty steel, and steel sheet piles. According to its 2024 annual report, Emsteel will continue to focus on low-carbon steel manufacturing and is optimistic about the rapid expansion of the UAE construction industry as a driving force for its products.

It is worth mentioning that Emsteel has actively promoted the application of green hydrogen energy in recent years. In October 2024, the company jointly launched a green hydrogen pilot project with Masdar, a renewable energy company based in Abu Dhabi. On the 21st of this month, Emsteel announced the supply of the first locally produced rebar based on hydrogen smelting technology for Abu Dhabi's first "net zero carbon" mosque, further demonstrating its commitment to green transformation.

According to a report released by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) in March this year, the Middle East and North Africa region has the potential to become a global leader in the transformation of the green steel industry. Emsteel's AB/EQ70 steel latest move undoubtedly confirms this trend once again.
