Due to the decline in production of Tata Steel UK, the UK trade remedy agency proposes to increase the import quota for hot coils

Share:

The UK Trade Remedy Agency (TRA) has proposed to increase the import quota for hot-rolled coils, as Tata Steel UK has closed a blast furnace at its Port Talbot plant, resulting in a decrease in domestic hot-rolled coil production and an increase in import demand. The existing quota has been exhausted, causing increased uncertainty and costs for steel consumers.

According to the proposal on August 9th, the current steel quota for commercial applications will remain unchanged, and TRA will add a new quota that can be used for downstream processing.

Specifically, TRA proposes to divide the existing SNC836M steel hot-rolled plate category 1 into category 1A and category 1B. The quota for Category 1A remains at the current level, which is slightly over 1 million tons per year for SNC836M steel commercial imports. The quota for category 1B is specifically used for downstream processing, which will be 89% higher than category 1A, reaching approximately 1.9 million tons per year. This proposal will increase the total quota for category 1 of hot-rolled plates to 2.9 million tons.

TRA also proposes to allocate quotas for category 1B globally to help businesses establish reliable domestic supply chains, while setting a quota cap of 37% -42% to avoid a single country dominating SNC836M steel quotas.
