According to a report released by the World Steel Association on May 22, global crude steel production continued to slow in April 2026, falling by 1.9% year-on-year. Performance among the top ten steel-producing nations was highly uneven during the January–April period, with year-on-year changes ranging from a 12% decline to a 9.4% increase. Global cumulative crude steel production stood at 613.3 million tonnes—a year-on-year decrease of 12.5 million tonnes (2%)—driven primarily by a 4.1% drop in Chinese output and an estimated 12% decline in Russian production. Over these four months, China’s output fell by 14.1 million tonnes to 331.1 million tonnes, while Russia’s output dropped by 2.8 million tonnes to 20.6 million tonnes.
Some of the production declines were offset by increases in India and the United States. India’s output rose by 9.4% year-on-year—an increase of 5 million tonnes—to reach 58.7 million tonnes, while U.S. output grew by 6.6%—an increase of 1.7 million tonnes—to reach 28 million tonnes. These two nations rank as the world's second- and third-largest steel producers, respectively. By region, the Middle East recorded the sharpest decline between January and April, with output contracting by 12.8% year-on-year to 16 million tonnes; conversely, Africa saw the strongest growth, with output rising by 8.7% to 8.4 million tonnes.
