Global steel production drops 4.7% year-on-year in July

In July 2024, global crude steel production totaled 152.8 million metric tons, a decrease of 4.7% compared to the same period last year and a decrease of 4.9% compared to the previous month. The global total production in the first seven months of this year reached 1.1 billion metric tons, a year-on-year decrease of 0.7%.

As the world's largest steel producer, China SN490B steel produced 82.9 million tons of crude steel in July, accounting for 54.3% of the global total production. A year-on-year decrease of 9% and a month on month decrease of 9.5%. From January to July, China's total crude steel production reached 613.7 million metric tons, a year-on-year decrease of 2.2%.

In contrast, India, as the second largest steel SN490B steel producer, produced 12.3 million tons of crude steel in July, an increase of 6.8% year-on-year and 2.7% month on month. In the first seven months of this year, India's crude steel production reached a cumulative total of 86.4 million tons, an increase of 7.2% compared to the same period last year.

The performance of other major steel producing countries varied in July. Japan's crude steel production was 7.1 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 3.8%; The crude steel production in the United States was 6.9 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 2.1%; Russia's crude steel production was 6.3 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 3.1%; South Korea's crude steel production was 5.5 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 3.4%.

Steel production in Türkiye and Brazil was relatively strong. In July, Türkiye's crude steel output reached 3.1 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 4%, and the total output in the first seven months of this year increased by 14.9%. Brazil's crude steel production was 3.1 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 11.6%. Iran's crude steel production has experienced a significant decline, with crude steel production in July reaching 1.8 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 18.7% and a month on month decrease of 32.3% SN490B steel.
