The total output of finished SA517 Grade H steel materials has increased, and the output of semi-finished products has decreased significantly
According to data from the Iranian Steel Producers Association (ISPA), the domestic production of semi-finished products and various types of steel in November 1403 (i.e. January 21, 2024 to February 19, 2025 in the Gregorian calendar) is shown in the following table. Among them, although the production of hot rolling, cold rolling, and coating has declined, the overall production of sheet metal has still increased compared to the previous month. Compared to the previous period, the production of semi-finished and long products has generally decreased, with a significant decrease in the production of billets and slabs, with a month on month decrease of 21.25% and 25.88%, respectively.
Data shows that by early 2025, Iran's SA517 Grade H steel monthly production of finished steel products will be higher than the same period last year and the year before. Although the production of semi-finished products is showing a downward trend, it still conforms to the production pattern of the same period in previous years. The reason for this is that the Iranian steel industry has been affected by natural gas supply restrictions in winter over the years, and semi-finished products (especially electric arc furnace steelmaking) are highly dependent on energy supply, and production capacity has not yet fully recovered
In terms of exports, semi-finished products are still the core products of Iran's steel exports. The export volume of square billets in February has declined to 329000 tons, a month on month decrease of 9.37% and a year-on-year decrease of 17%. The export of slab showed a month on month growth trend, with an export volume of 293000 tons, an increase of 22.08%, but the year-on-year growth rate slowed down, continuing the overall trend of slow export. Except for billets and cold-rolled products, the export volume of other steel varieties showed a month on month increase. Among them, the export volume of hot rolling surged by 40.58% to 97000 tons, occupying a dominant position in the export products of sheet metal, driving the overall export of sheet metal to increase by 39.74% month on month and 12.6% year-on-year.
In terms of imports, Iran's semi-finished product market relies on local supply, with low import demand and overall self-sufficiency. The import volume of finished steel products in February increased by 15.83% month on month, reaching 139000 tons. Among them, the import volume of sheet metal has generally increased, indicating a steady recovery in downstream manufacturing demand. In contrast, the import volume of long timber decreased by 27.27% month on month to 8000 tons, indicating relatively weak market SA517 Grade H steel demand.
