Russian steel giant Magnitogorsk KR R/B steel Steel Company (MMK) has completed a crucial step in its modernization upgrade plan for its coke production line, officially closing the last two old coke oven batteries, marking significant progress in the company's environmental transformation.

According to reports, MMK has recently shut down its 4th coke oven battery (with an annual production capacity of 560000 tons) and 8th coke oven battery (with an annual production capacity of 840000 tons). Prior to this, the company had gradually phased out the No. 1, No. 2, No. 13, and No. 14 coke oven batteries within 2024. The total designed production capacity of these devices was 2.3 million tons per year, but due to equipment aging and production capacity below the design level, they could no longer meet current environmental and production requirements.

This series of shutdowns KR R/B steel was achieved mainly due to the construction of the new No. 12 coke oven battery, which was put into operation in July 2024. The device adopts advanced dry quenching technology, with a designed production capacity of 2.5 million tons per year, effectively filling the capacity gap after the exit of old equipment.

MMK stated in the statement that the core goal of this upgrade plan is to significantly reduce environmental impact. According to the company's calculations, after full production, it is expected to reduce 11350 tons of air pollutant emissions and 2.2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. In practical terms, the concentration of benzo [a] pyrene has decreased by 40% at the health protection boundary, formaldehyde emissions have decreased by 90%, and dust emissions have decreased by 21%.

Despite the impact of shutting down coke ovens on production, MMK still produced 2.07 million tons of coke in the first half of 2025, a year-on-year decrease of about 15%. This change reflects that MMK is sacrificing some short-term production capacity in exchange for long-term environmental and sustainable development advantages. With the continuous promotion of green transformation, MMK KR R/B steel is expected to further optimize its coke production structure in the medium and long term, promoting its competitive position in the global green steel landscape.
