Severstal Steel plans to continue upgrading blast furnace capacity by 2025

Share:

Severstal, a Russian steel company, plans to shut down a blast furnace in CherMK for a comprehensive overhaul in the second half of 2025. This upgrade not only aims to restore the performance of the blast furnace, but also to increase the proportion of pellet ore used in the furnace charge and reduce the environmental impact during the production process.

Chermet Steel A285 Grade A steel Plant will carry out a major overhaul of its No. 4 blast furnace (with an annual output of 2.4 million tons of pig iron), including the replacement of bell less loading devices, updating the furnace cooling system and refractory brick masonry, as well as repairing the air heater unit, cast iron yard, and exhaust system. Evgeny A285 Grade A steel Vinogradov, General Manager of the Resource Assets Department at Severstal Steel Company, stated, "After completing these tasks, Blast Furnace 4 will operate for at least another 15 years, restoring its design parameters while improving production efficiency, reliability, and environmental sustainability. The upgraded blast furnace will be able to use more pellet ore, reduce solid fuel consumption, thereby improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact." Currently, relevant preparation and design work is underway.

This project is part of Chevrolet A285 Grade A steel Steel's 2028 development plan. Last year, Chermet upgraded the technology of its largest No. 5 blast furnace (with an annual output of 4.5 million tons). It is reported that after the upgrade of the No. 4 blast furnace, it is expected to increase the proportion of pellet ore in the furnace charge to 90%, while reducing coke consumption and increasing the use of natural gas. The goal of this plan is to reduce production costs and ensure that the overall cost of its converter plates is 15% lower than its competitors. Chermet currently has five blast furnaces with a total annual production capacity of approximately 12.3 million tons.
