Six European Countries Initiate Comprehensive Utilization Projects of Direct Reduction Byproducts

Share:

On January 23rd, nine companies and institutions from six European countries, including Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, and Germany A792 Grade 37(255) steel, established ZHYRON (officially known as "iron rich & zinc containing steel making by productsviaHYdrogen based ReductionON") in Saragossa, Spain, with the aim of creating conditions for the comprehensive utilization of iron and zinc rich steelmaking by-products and promoting the sustainable development of the steel industry.

The ZHYRON funded project A792 Grade 37(255) steel will explore feasible solutions that are economically and environmentally beneficial for the comprehensive utilization of steel by-products from green hydrogen direct reduction processes. One important task of this funding project is to develop innovative technologies for extracting iron and zinc from hydrogen direct reduction waste residue, and to recycle the extracted iron oxide as raw material for electric arc furnaces. The extracted zinc will be processed into zinc oxide for use in industries such as batteries and wastewater treatment. It is reported that the funding project is part of the Clean Steel EU Partnership (CSP) program in the European Union, funded by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA). The 9 companies and institutions participating in this project include the Circle Foundation - Energy Cycle and Consumption Investment Center, ArcelorMittal Innovation Investment Company, ArcelorMittal French American Maizieres Research Center, Belgian Metallurgical Research Center, Heidenham Steel Company, Italian ICONS Foundation, etc.

Among them, the ICONS Foundation in Italy will be responsible for communicating with stakeholders. Direct reduction and comprehensive utilization of waste can prevent hazardous waste landfill, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and promote the establishment of new recycling systems. The representative of ArcelorMittal emphasized that by leveraging the advantages of nine partners through cooperation, new processes based on green hydrogen and clean electricity will be developed, and the entire process will not emit harmful gases to the environment A792 Grade 37(255) steel.
