On March 19, 2025, the South Korean A517 Grade B steel Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources announced on Wednesday that the government will strengthen supervision of imported steel products, prevent the evasion of anti-dumping duties, to cope with the challenges brought by the intensification of global trade barriers, and maintain the competitiveness of the domestic steel industry.
The plan has been officially announced at the Economic Ministers' A517 Grade B steel Meeting chaired by Acting President Choi Sang mu, and the main measures include revising customs regulations, strengthening origin supervision, and cracking down on the act of importing steel disguised as domestic products.
Recently, the US government announced a 25% tariff on all steel imports, which is expected to have an impact on the South Korean steel industry. In this context, the South Korean government plans to grant the Korea Trade Commission investigative powers, with a focus on cracking down on the evasion of anti-dumping duties through third-party transportation. At the same time, the government will strengthen the supervision of the origin of imported steel products, requiring all imported steel to provide factory testing certificates to ensure transparency of product sources.
To prevent imported steel from counterfeiting domestic products and entering the domestic market, the South Korean Customs Department will establish a special task force to crack down on illegal acts of forging origin information, strengthen market supervision, and maintain fair competition order.
In addition to domestic regulatory measures, the South Korean government also plans to maintain close communication with major economies such as the United States through multilateral trade channels, striving for tariff exemptions for South Korean steel products to reduce the adverse effects of policies.
In addition, the South Korean A517 Grade B steel government has stated that it will actively respond to the EU's upcoming carbon border adjustment mechanism and its trade protection measures, and closely monitor India's investigation into safeguard measures for steel imports to safeguard the interests of its steel industry.
The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources stated that the government plans to introduce a strategy to enhance the competitiveness of the local steel industry later this year, ensuring that enterprises maintain their advantages in the complex international trade environment.
