Southeast Asia’s steel industry seeks to improve the scrap supply chain and reduce reliance on imports

On May 18, Jojo Magsajo, Chairman of the South East Asia Iron and Steel Institute (SEAISI), stated at the SEAISI Conference and Exhibition 2026 in Singapore that the region's steel industry could reduce its reliance on imported materials and lower carbon emissions by improving scrap management and recycling processes.

He noted that while the region's demand for finished steel products stood at 81.2 million tonnes in 2024—a volume that could theoretically be met by local production—65% of the steel consumed in the region still relied on imports.
